Pattern Welded Spearhead - Hereford Museum

This pattern welded spear head is based on a find from the Hereford Musuem collection. It is a Petersen type K spear head with a very intricate pattern welded blade. The blade is made up of four parts:

An inner wedge of plain steel

Two middle layers of pattern welded bars twisted clockwise and anticlockwise and

A cutting edge of straight laminate pattern welded steel

The socket is also decorated with bands of inlayed copper alloy.

This highly decorated spear head clearly belonged to a person of power and status.
