An Early Medieval buckle with zoomorphic heads at each end of the bar. This type of buckle can be referred to as “Beast Biting Bar Type”. The centre of the buckle is marked by raised rectangular strips which serve as a rest for the pin.
Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website under record ID’s SWYOR-3514C2, SWYOR-BA7FD2 and SWYOR-90418A.
This buckle would have seen use between the 10th – 12th centuries.
Cast in the UK from brass using the lost wax casting process, original master carved by Andy Mason, cast by Stuart Makin of Jackhammer Forge.
38mm wide x 28mm long. Suitable for a 25mm wide belt strap.
The buckle comes included with a brass plate and a rivet to fit it to your belt strap.
